How to Put On a Mattress Encasement

Posted on

Mattress encasements or protectors come in several different sizes and types, including box spring mattress protectors for your home, and RV mattress protectors for RVs and campers . Before discussing how to put on a mattress encasement, we will review some of the reasons why they are beneficial for protecting your mattress and box springs.

Mattress protectors are designed to help protect the mattress from accidental spills, bedwetting, dust mites, bed bugs, and stains. These protectors repel liquids rather than allowing them to be absorbed into the mattress or box springs which can leave stains and unwanted smells. The encasement utilizes a protective barrier and keeps liquids on top, where they are easy to clean up.

In addition, the protector keeps bed bugs and dust mites from getting into the mattress and box springs, where they are difficult to fully remove. Dust mites are attracted to dead skin cells, which are mostly shed while we sleep. Without a protector, the dead skin cells work their way into the mattress, attracting dust mites and causing allergy flares. In the case of an active bed bug infestation, the encasement traps them inside the mattress and cuts off their food supply. When the encasement in installed proactively, it prevents them from taking up residence in the mattress in the first place. Further, a high quality mattress encasement provides additional comfort while you are sleeping.

Tips for Buying and Putting on a Mattress Encasement

  • Tip #1 – Measure Your Mattress and Box Springs

Mattress encasements come in all different sizes to fit a variety of mattresses and box springs. Most manufacturers use common terms to refer to size, like twin, double, queen, and king. However, there can be slight variances in the dimensions of the box springs and mattress. Measuring helps ensure you order the right size to fit your box springs and mattresses.

  • Tip #2 – Verify the Information on the Packaging

Prior to opening your new encasements, confirm they are the right size for your mattresses or box springs. There are differences between box spring and mattress encasements, so you will want to make sure you are using the correct one.

  • Tip #3 – Wash the Encasements Prior to Installing

Before putting the encasements on, take the time to wash them to remove any smells which may be the result of shipping or from the packaging. Never use bleach.

  • Tip #4 – Ask a Friend to Help

It is easier to install mattress protectors when you have someone to assist you with the process.

  • Tip # 5 – Remove and Wash All Bedding

You already washed the encasement, so it only makes sense to wash your bedding so that everything is nice and fresh.

  • Tip # 6 – Remove the Mattress and Box Springs from the Bed Frame

Lean the mattress and box springs against the wall to make them easier to work with.

  • Tip # 7 – Work with One Encasement at a Time

Unzip and install one encasement at a time to prevent accidently mixing up protectors with each other. Start by wrapping the unzippered section of the encasement over the top of the mattress or box springs. Verify the soft side is facing outwards. Continue to pull the encasement entirely around the mattress or box springs, and then zip it shut and replace it onto the bed. When placing the box spring back on the bed frame, do not let the bed frame snag and tear your box spring encasement.
