RV Mattresses and Mattress Protectors Natural Cleaning Products and Tips

Posted on

Keeping the mattresses and waterproof mattress protectors in your RV clean is an essential part of ensuring you get a decent night’s rest. There are several different natural cleaning products you can make using the products you already have stocked in your RV. Not to mention, some of these homemade cleaning agents are also eco-friendly.

Cleaning RV Mattresses

All you need to refresh your mattresses is baking soda. You will want to use one 16-ounce box per queen- or king-size mattress, and about 8-ounces for standard- and full-size mattresses. You can add about 10 to 20 drops of essential oil in your favorite scent, such as lavender, sandalwood, or chamomile, to give your mattress a nice, soothing, and relaxing scent to help you drift off to sleep faster.

If you choose to use essential oil, open a box of baking soda and add the drops directly into the box. Close the box and gently shake it to evenly distribute the oil. Now, shake the entire contents of the box evenly over the mattress, making sure to break up large clumps, while rubbing the mixture into the mattress.

Let the baking soda sit for at least an hour before slowing vacuuming it up. You may also want to flip the mattress over and clean the other side, too. Plus, it is a good idea to rotate your mattresses about every six months to prevent sagging and to extend its life.

While you are waiting, you can make an all-purpose cleaner using ¼ cup of baking soda, ½ cup of vinegar, and ½ gallon of water to use to wipe down the bed frame, walls, and furniture around the bed. If the furniture is made of wood, use between 5 and 10 drops of essential lemon oil and ½ cup of water to make furniture polish you can pour into a spray bottle.

Cleaning RV Mattress Covers

The easiest way to clean your RV mattress encasements is to toss them into the washing machine using an eco-friendly laundry detergent. However, when you are on the road, it can be difficult to find time to get to a laundromat. In between washings, you can use the same method used on the mattresses to freshen up the mattress covers.

It is important to treat stains from accidental spills right away to prevent them from setting. Never rub the wet area on the mattress cover, as this can spread the spill and create a larger stain. Instead, use a damp cloth to blot the spill and remove as much moisture as possible.

To treat the stain, you can mix 1 cup of laundry detergent with 1 gallon of hot water and 1 cup of either chlorine bleach or color-safe bleach. If the bleach is concentrated, use ½ cup. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray directly onto the stain. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes, and then blot it up with a damp cloth. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on top to help remove smells and absorb any remaining moisture. Leave the baking soda on for at least an hour before vacuuming it off the cover.
