How to Keep RV Surfaces Clean and Sanitary While Traveling with Pets

Posted on

Traveling in your RV or camper with your pets can be a much better alternative than putting them in a kennel. However, you need to protect the bedding and sitting surfaces, and keep them clean and sanitary to prevent unwanted pet odors. Before traveling with your pet, consider the following tips and tricks to keeping your RV and camper smelling fresh.

RV Mattress Covers

  1. Use protective mattress covers. RV and camper sheets will absorb pet odors, guard against pet dander, and pests, like fleas. A protective cover over the mattress stops pests, pet dander, and odors from getting into the mattress. Also, the added convenience of using the Essential Camper’s Sheet an all in one fitted sheet and mattress protector is a great comfort to have on a long trip.
  2. Replace carpeting with laminate flooring. Carpets are hosts to odors, fleas, dust mites, pet dander, dirt, and more. Tear out the carpeting and replace it with a wood, vinyl, or some other type of laminate flooring, since it is easier to keep clean and not worry about pet accidents absorbing into the carpet and making the RV or camper smell.
  3. Decide whether your pet will be allowed on beds and sofas. Some pet owners do not mind if their cat or dog lays on the sofa or gets into bed with them. If you do, remember to wash removable covers and bedding at least once a week.
  4. Be prepared for accidents. Accidents are bound to happen, and being prepared by stocking the right cleaning products and plenty of paper towels will make cleaning them up much easier and simpler.
  5. Keep pet food and water dishes in locations where they cannot be knocked over. Space inside an RV or camper can be tight. Select a location for pet food and water dishes where they can easily get to them, but you will not be tripping over them.
  6. Use antibacterial surface cleaners. Your dog is going to track in all sorts of germs and other things from the great outdoors, and these are quickly eliminated with the right antibacterial cleaning products.
  7. Steam clean sitting surfaces after trips. If you let your dog sit on the sofa, steam clean it after you return home or, if you live year round in your RV, pick up a small steam cleaner and use it monthly.
  8. Keep a pet towel handy near the door and use door mats. Place door mats on the outside and inside of the door. These will help get some of the dirt, grass, and leaves off of your pet. When your pet enters the RV, use their pet towel to remove larger items or to dry them off if they jumped into the lake or got soaked in a down pour.

Traveling with pets can seem like a lot of work, but, if you take the time to prepare your RV or camper before your next trip, you will be glad you brought them along.
