RV Mattress Pads versus RV Mattress Protectors: Pros and Cons

Posted on

When you purchase a new RV mattress or are looking for ways to protect your current one, two common products you will encounter are RV mattress pads and RV mattress protectors. Deciding which one is right for your RV or camper might seem confusing if you do not fully understand the features and options of each product.

RV Mattress Pads

RV mattress pads are an additional layer of padding that is placed between the mattress and the sheets. The can help increase the comfort of the mattress. Thinner mattress pads really do nothing more than provide some additional padding. Thicker ones can help collect some perspiration and prevent it from getting into the mattress, but can still be insufficient if you sweat constantly throughout the night while you sleep.

In addition, mattress pads do nothing to protect the mattress from dead skin cells, bed bugs, dust mites, dust, and other allergens. All of these things can still easily get into the mattress, where they are difficult, if not impossible to fully remove. Further, for people with incontinence problems or children with bedwetting problems, mattress pads will not stop urine from being absorbed into the mattress.

RV Mattress Protectors

RV mattress protectors are special, form-fitted encasements which go completely around the entire mattress and create a barrier of protection. These can be used with sheets or as a mattress protector and fitted sheet all in one.

Keep in mind there are different types, which range from low quality ones made from plastic or vinyl materials to high-end ones made from soft breathable materials with a a thin, waterproof backing. Ideally, you will want the higher-end ones since these provide the best overall protection and can easily be cleaned by tossing them into your washing machine, not to mention that they are dryer safe. (Our products have neither vinyl nor are they made of cotton.)

Unlike mattress pads, mattress protectors block out all forms of liquids, including perspiration, urine, water, accidental beverage spills, and other bodily fluids. In addition, the mattress encasement keeps your mattress free from bed bugs, dust mites, pet dander, dust, dirt, dead skin cells, and other allergens. Further, if you or any of your family members suffer from asthma or allergies, mattress protectors are a better choice than mattress pads, since allergens can be washed out of the protector.

Which One Is Better?

Mattress pads are great for blow-up vinyl air mattresses to increase comfort. However, when it comes to traditional foam mattresses, mattress protectors are the better choice. Not only are they comfortable to sleep on, but they also help protect the mattress from a wide range of liquids, dust, dirt, allergens, and pests.
