How to Correctly Match RV Bedding Size with Mattress Dimensions

Posted on

People are often surprised to learn there are variances in mattress sizes when comparing an RV mattress to a home mattress.Even between RV manufacturers, mattresses called the same name may vary greatly in actual dimensions.

This makes it important to take your own measurements and not rely completely upon information provided by mattress or RV manufacturer. The following tips will help you correctly measure and match your camper or RV mattress with the correct size of bedding.

  1. Measure the length and width of the bed frame. Measure from the top of the bed frame to the bottom, and then measure across the widest part of the frame from left to right. Keep in mind, for recessed frames with raised exterior edges, you want to only measure the interior dimension up to the corner where the raised edge begins.
  2. Measure the length, width, and depth of any mattresses you like. Remember to take along your measurements and your tape measure when you head to your local mattress store. You will want to make sure to verify the dimensions of any mattress you like to ensure they will fit correctly in your RV or camper bed frame.

Remember to allow for additional space around the mattress for waterproof RV mattress protectors and camper bed sheets. The last thing you want is the sheets and mattress encasement rubbing up against the bed frame and potentially being ripped, torn, or damaged.

An ideal allowance for the bed sheets and encasement covers is a quarter of an inch. Simply subtract a quarter of an inch off of the measurements you recorded for the length and width of the bed frame. In cases where you find a suitable mattress, but it is about an eighth of an inch larger than the adjusted bed frame measurements, a viable option is to consider an all-in-one fitted camper bed sheet and encasement.

When it comes to selecting encasements and sheets for your new RV or camper bed mattress, use the dimensions of the mattress, not the bed frame. This will ensure you purchase the right size sheets and encasement to fit properly around the mattress.
